Although I've had tons of luck with my clients choosing great outfits for themselves, I know how stressful this can be. That's why I wanted to provide an in-depth explanation for what you should wear, and why!

Colors

Let's start with the colors! Now each photographer is different and has a different style of editing, so the best practice would be to consult with your photographer about what they recommend for your specific shoot. They will know the locations you will be shooting at and what colors will compliment that location.

However, I personally would recommend choosing something that is a neutral color. Bright colors are more likely to clash with the environment instead of complimenting it. Bright colors also have the ability to reflect back onto your skin. Although it may be slight, that bright red dress will make your skin look slightly more red. Colors like white, tan, and black will make your skin look the best. I also understand that certain colors look better with your skin, hair and eyes, and there are professionals that can give you a good idea of what you should wear, however, to make sure you look best in the environment we’re shooting in, neutrals tend to be safer. It is also easier to coordinate outfits with your significant other if you are both in neutrals!

Furthermore, check out artwork released through explanation of what color combinations you should avoid and why. Some of the color combinations include Yellow and Green, and Red and Green. Since green is found abundantly in nature, you may want to steer clear of yellow and red in your outfits.

Type of Shoes

The second thing to think about is the environment in order to help you pick the best shoe. There is a riverside I like to shoot at, but it’s very sandy, in order to keep your shoes clean and not sandy, you would want to pick a sandal or flip flops you can take off and just go barefoot, instead of picking something that requires a sock and will get filled with sand and be uncomfortable.

Also being in Oklahoma, if we are shooting in a field or somewhere grassy, it is best to pick a shoe that is not white. I like to have my couples running around quite a bit and have lots of prompts that require movement. I would hate for my couples to leave with ruined white shoes because of the Oklahoma red dirt.

The third thing to consider when choosing shoes is comfort. Like I mentioned in the last paragraph, I like to have lots of movement in my shoots, this would be difficult in heels or uncomfortable shoes of any kind. This will significantly change the result of the pictures and the kinds of photos you get back if I have to change the prompts due to a shoe choice. Not to say we can’t make it work, but it is good to keep in mind!

Type of Clothes

The third thing to keep in mind is the type of clothes you wear! Weather and comfort are going to be the biggest things to keep in mind for this decision. I love the look of dresses in photos, the movement it creates and how flowy they are is perfect! However, if it is windy out you will be more concerned with your dress flying up, and less comfortable overall with the session. And as much as I wish I could say you can’t tell in photos, you will be able to see discomfort in your photos. It is hard to hide that feeling!

Try to wear something that you know you will be comfortable in and won’t constantly fiddle with. I want you to thoroughly enjoy this date night out taking photos and I know that every time I go out on a date with my husband, if I am not completely comfortable, it will change how much fun I have! I want this to be a fun and enjoyable experience for you!
